“The Overstory” by Richard Powers has consumed my month. The words from its pages propagating in my head, growing vigorously with information, inspiration, and anger. This book is a break from our quest for furniture-based knowledge, launching into a fictional yet all-too-real world where the story is greater than any one character. A journey that starts with the planting of three chestnut trees, the book follows individuals as they work their way through heartbreak, loss, and love. They may be separated geographically, but all are interconnected by something larger than themselves, a call for help of sorts.

I thought it was important to post this blog today because it is Earth Day, a day to cherish and celebrate our common home, one of which there is no backup. I’m sure we’ve all noticed mother nature acting out more these days, angry at its most annoying inhabitants, and I think bringing some recognition and kindness to her is needed. So, do something today that is good for the environment, whether it’s riding your bike to work or chaining yourself to a patch of endangered forest. We all need to pitch in and work together to make our mom happy. Like kids making breakfast on Mother’s Day, she will be proud of you because you tried, and that means more than anything.

For this month’s meeting, we are going moderator-less, “full anarchy” as the Discord has described it. Every once and awhile, it’s nice to hang out as a group of friends, no leaders, and talk about whatever we feel like. This book has so many undertones and references, funny, sad, you name it, there will be no lack of conversation. No matter how far you are in the book, hearing about the pages past your bookmark will only encourage you to finish. Our meeting this month will take place on Sunday, May 3rd at 7:00 pm EST. If you can’t make it or want to finish the book first, I encourage you to drop into the text thread of Discord and join the conversation about “The Overstory”, maybe drop an idea of a simple task we could do to make our mother nature proud on Earth Day.
