Deirdre Visser, author of “Joinery, Joists, and Gender: A History of Woodworking for the 21st Century,” will be our guest moderator this month. This makes our author/moderator record 3 for 3, which is great for my imaginary “Book Madness” bracket. Visser is a San Francisco-born educator, artist, and curator as well as an avid woodworker.

Curator of The Arts at CIIS, publisher of CHROMA books, and most recently, the visiting curator at Mills College at Northeastern University, Visser is passionate about art, education, inclusivity, and community engagement. “All of my work—whether as a writer, teacher, curator, or artist—is rooted in the belief that arts and culture advance civic participation and engagement in our communities and provide us invaluable tools to tell stories too long unheard, catalyze and nourish discourse across differences, and imagine and build an equitable and sustainable future”.

As an undergraduate, Visser fell in love with woodworking, and while taking a sabbatical, she attended The Krenov School in Fort Bragg, CA. Along with some beautiful pieces of furniture, Visser left with a seed planted that would later grow into the “Making a Seat at the Table” exhibition, which was co-curated by friend of the club, Laura Mays. The inspiration from the exhibit then led to the publishing of this month’s book. If you are in the Bay Area, Visser teaches woodworking at the Randall Museum of Art in San Francisco.
