September's Book

"A Short History of Black Craft in Ten Objects" by Robell Awake is a MUST-read. Written by a woodworker, but not specific to woodworking, this book catalogs the immense influence that black culture has had on its white counterparts. It feels selfish to wish this were longer, but I do. I could read 50 chapters of this book, the writing is intimate yet concise, like a retelling of a story from a family member, only with dates and names painstakingly researched. I knew how important this book was when I added it to the list, but its ever-growing importance through an administration actively erasing black culture and history.

I will always be a sucker for good artwork in books, and this is great artwork. Johnalynn Holland's illustrations captured the essence of the stories being told. Bright and original, the artwork is telling stories all its own. Check out more of Johnalynn's other work at johnalynnholland.com

Even if you missed the opportunity to read this book in September with the group, I urge you to read it and discuss it with others. Also, you don't need to read this book to join our meeting; all are welcome. This meeting will also be recorded and uploaded to our YouTube channel. The meeting will take place this Sunday, 10/5, at 7:00 p.m. EST. on Discord. Hope to see you there!
